Unite Students

As students returned to university following the COVID-19 pandemic lockdown, a hall of residence in Cardiff found it needed connectivity for 700 students with less than four days lead time. Trogon delivered gigabit-speed connectivity to the purpose-built student accommodation block in Cardiff in this time.

Unite Students provides accommodation for 76,000 students in the UK and is the UK’s largest provider of purpose-built student accommodation.

Lockdown due to Coronavirus saw students forced to leave their accommodation at short notice.  Lockdown restrictions meant that access to halls of residence and routine maintenance activities were restricted for nearly six-months.

As plans for students to return to Cardiff University progressed it was realised that one hall of residence serving around 700 students had lost its fixed-line internet connectivity, meaning no one in the hall would have access to the internet, just four days before the students returned.

With students traditionally relying heavily on internet connectivity for study and communication this situation was potentially disastrous, particularly in light of the increased reliance on online learning in response to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Trogon has a reputation for rapidly responding to customer needs and in particular providing high quality, enterprise-grade connectivity at short notice.

A hall of residence for 700 students presents a challenge to any internet service provider. 700 students with multiple connected devices require very high quality, stable and above all high-bandwidth connectivity.

Trogon looked to deploy new technology, ultra-high bandwidth links, as part of the Trogon Remote Link service, to meet the demand.  This service provides the multi-gigabit-speed connectivity required to service student accommodation.

Trogon received the request to help on a Thursday afternoon. A series of planning meetings followed, and on the Sunday they deployed to site. By Sunday evening the equipment was installed, tested and operational in time for the arrival of 700 new students on Monday morning.

Trogon delivered a non-standard solution in less than four days.  Trogon’s fastest competitor aims to deliver service in less than ten days, and mainstream ISPs quote weeks but often take months.  This is why Trogon was selected and this is why.
